NASA...Hubble....Worth it right now?

With all the Hubble things in the news right now, I was wondering something. In the absolutely ugly economy we're toiling in right now, should we be worried about clear images of things we cannot touch during our time here in the universe?

I understand that NASA has brought us many innovations like cell phones, microwaves, etc...Hell, probably most technologically progressive inventions can be attributed to NASA and their quest for all things space compatible. I still have to question whether or not we should be dumping the money into any space program at this time.

I don't mean to bad mouth the space program, nor am I saying to shut it down. I'm just wondering how it makes sense given our current economic state. Is the space program employing and supporting a workforce/industry so large that we should just keep going? Not being an anti-government "nut" here, but maybe there such a hold on the government by the industry that their lobbyists and "donations" won't allow us to pull back?

Can anyone take a minute and explain why the we should keep going at this time?
